Charlie Parker made several visits to Boston in 1953-1954, where he was often hired to play as a ‘single’ at the Hi-Hat Club, backed by local musicians.
Among them were some very well-known names such as trumpeter Joe Gordon, pianist Dick Twardzik and bassist Jimmy Woode (who was born in Philadelphia but studied in Boston). Also heard here on some tracks are the great Charles Mingus, Roy Haynes, and on one broadcast tenor saxophonist Jay Migliori, who would form the Charlie Parker tribute band Supersax in 1972.
Among the highlights are Bird’s best version of ‘My Funny Valentine’ and a wonderful small-group reading of ‘Laura’, which Bird usually played with strings. A set featuring Parker as a guest of Stan Kentons orchestra, recorded during the same period and containing another version of ‘My Funny Valentine’, has been added as a bonus.
