'"It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God ..." — this expression by Salieri in the movie "Amadeus" about the "Gran Partita" describes quite well the shivers that Mozart's wind music is able to evoke. In addition to the familiar pieces, this collection of the complete chamber music works for wind instruments takes us deeper into the world of harmony music and the serenade, the partita or the nocturne. Were these works, written mainly in Mozart's middle-Salzburg and early-Vienna years, intended for the princely table or as nocturnal outdoor music? In any case, the secular designation "divertimento" mostly came from father Leopold, but the music of son Wolfgang Amadé seems to come straight down from heaven. This new recording "made in Salzburg" bears the Mozarteum's seal of quality: the ensemble is made up of graduates or teachers from the world-famous university and brings together musicians from leading orchestras as well as soloists and international award winners. The historic horns, trumpets and kettledrums, which are partly used, create a delightful mixed sound in harmony with modern instruments. The recording also takes into account the fragmentary works that have come down to us, as well as pieces that have not been confirmed but are very likely to have been written by Mozart. A detailed essay by Dr. Ulrich Leisinger of the Mozarteum illuminates the background of this enchanting music.
