Those who knew him in life said that Bill Evans was the loneliest man they had ever met, and yet he seemed able to form deep and lasting relationships, at least when fate did not intervene. The Village Vanguard sessions of June 1961 teamed him with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, a group he would have kept together for years had LaFaro not died in a tragic auto accident weeks after their most famous club engagement. It’s recognized that Sunday at the Village Vanguard, the best-known live recording of that residency, was mainly intended as a showcase for LaFaro’s virtuosic playing. Waltz for Debby is more about the group chemistry and to that degree is a far more profound statement. Evans’s playing on “My Foolish Heart” has influenced piano players ever since and is regularly cited as an inspiration by classical composer Gavin Bryars. The other favorite track of the session is the title tune, written by Bill for his niece, which shows again, if proof were needed, that the loneliest man had affection and commitment to spare for those he loved.
