'“Fujita is a musician of tremendous versatility and taste, with a poetic sense of pulse and eloquent, insightful, fearless articulation.” — The Times. Mao Fujita is delighted to announce that on October 7th, 2022, Sony Classical will happily release his eagerly anticipated studio recording of the Complete Mozart Piano Sonatas cycle as a 5CD box set. A significant undertaking for any pianist, this project also marks the rising piano star’s Sony Classical debut. Fujita upends the image of Mozart’s music as written down fully-formed and without correction and approaches these sonatas, written between 1774-1789, with the understanding that Mozart - a pianist himself - often improvised during his own performances of the works and rather treated the scores as starting points for improvisation and embellishment. They have become an integral part of this young and increasingly in-demand pianist’s own musical biography. He took the silver medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019, in part thanks to his performance of the Mozart Piano Sonata No. 10 (K. 330), inspired by Vladimir Horowitz’s 1986 recital in Moscow of the same piece and the recording of which initially inspired Fujita to take up the piano. With an innate musical sensitivity and naturalness to his artistry, 23-year-old pianist Mao Fujita has already impressed many leading musicians as one of those special talents which come along only rarely, equally at home in Mozart as the major romantic repertoire. Born in Tokyo and starting piano tuition at the age of three, Fujita was still studying at the Tokyo College of Music when, in 2017 he won First Prize at the prestigious Concours International de Piano Clara Haskil in Switzerland, along with the Audience Award, Prix Modern Times and the Prix Coup de Coeur, which first brought him to the attention of the international music community. Fujita appeared in recital at the Klavier-Festival Ruhr, at Verbier Festival as Academy Musician, and in the New Generation series at the Louis Vuitton Foundation. Fujita’s performances continue to draw audiences into the music through a personal and intimate style, complemented by a sense of roving curiosity and delight that comes from constantly discovering new aspects of the music, sometimes even during a performance. His innate musical sensitivity, natural ability, vitality and wit shine through his performances and charm audiences all over the world.
